2004 | Charles B. | CALHOUN GA | 02/05/10 | 2.00 | no commentPurchased a 2004 Highlander new. In less than 10,000 miles a tire seperated and blew out. The low air tire pressure light has been on shortly after purchasing. It has been carried back at least 6 times to the dealer and is still not fixed. In 2009 my wife was driving on a busy two lane road in the city and the steering angle sensor located in the steering wheel malfunctioned. It locked the left fron wheel and jerked the car into the other lane and broght the car to an immediate stop. The on coming car had room to dodge her and the tractor trailer behind her almost ran over her. When I carried the car to the dealer rather than realize the serious nature of a desgn safety flaw they were more interested in saying this had never happened befor. They indicated the steering angle sensor was probably faulty and wanted almost $700 dollars to fix but said they could not guarentee this would fix the problem. I had the sensor put in at another garage and this fixed the problem What is disturbng about this incident is when a safety feature malfunctions and almost causes two wrecks, you would think the dealer would be more interested in making sure this never happens again rather than dismissing the incedent as it has never happened before. This should never happen. They have not properly safety engineered their cars. When a safety feature malfunctions it should disable the system and send a warning message to the driver not start engaging components at will. | 2004 | Ricky S. | HEPHZIBAH GA | 01/13/10 | 3.00 | The accelerator is too touchy. Too easy to start spinning the tires. Also has torque steer. And no leg room in the passenger side. | 2004 | John W. | MANOR TX | 11/29/09 | 4.00 | The steering wheel has a poping feel and noise when moving or sitting still and you are are just barely turning the wheel from side to side. | 2004 | Alex L. | SAN CLEMENTE CA | 11/20/09 | 1.00 | Blown ABS control unit 3k
Left passenger side window fell off tracks
Radio changes stations by itself
Heating controls faulty
water cooler requires replacement $400
IT doesn't take a genius to figure out this car is a defect that toyota let off the plant. | 2004 | Dennis A. | WAUKESHA WI | 11/02/09 | 3.00 | Overall great dependable car. Not however whithout problems.
Fuel air sensor not working from almost date of purchase. Tire pressure lite difficulties. Now water problem that I understand is a technical bulletin issue | 2004 | Rob L. | DURHAM NC | 07/17/09 | 5.00 | None of significance. The steering wheel shaft has a clunk that started just after the 36,000 warranty that is a known issue. The should have recalled it but it still works fine years later. | 2004 | GARY S. |
| 06/09/09 | 2.00 | REPLACED REAR BRAKES 2 TIMES AND BOTH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS BEFORE REACHING 80,000 KM . | 2004 | Marilyn C. | HANCOCK MI | 06/04/09 | 3.00 | I am having a problem with the anti skid system light and now I feel the system engaging. | 2004 | Steve H. | PORTLAND OR | 05/28/09 | 3.00 | Navigation system and other functions operate intermittently. Usually starts operation after driving 4 to 6 miles. Sometimes system indicates to check air conditioning connection. | 2004 | Rachel K. | STERLING VA | 03/17/09 | 1.00 | My car is just shy of 5yrs and has 63700 miles on it and it's transmission is failing and needs to be replaced. | 2004 | Andrea V. | MARIETTA GA | 03/03/09 | 3.00 | had to replace catalytic converter in '08. need head gasket repair in which dealer says only fix is to replace the engine! | 2004 | Mick K. | OSSEO MN | 02/25/09 | 5.00 | Good reliable car, average design | 2004 | James E. | FENTON MO | 02/23/09 | 4.00 | Everything has been great up until about 70,000 miles. The VSC (Vehicle Stabililty Control) has begun to malfunction. Apparently this is common but Toyota has NOT issued a recall, only a service bulletin for this problem. | 2004 | Richard G. | POWELL OH | 02/01/09 | 2.00 | Overall, good, comfortable car. Poor powertrain reliability. Highway driving burned transmission (stuck 3rd-4th gear solenoids) at 85K miles (May 07) and again at 125K miles (Jan 09)! | 2004 | Lisa H. | CHARLOTTE NC | 01/22/09 | 4.00 | 4 when i lock the car, manually or with key fob the alarm goes off SOMETIMES all by itself...very annoying and embarrassing... the horn is just honking away... dealer is clueless or says they are whatever. | 2004 | Jay S. | HUNTERSVILLE NC | 01/21/09 | n/a | Complaint #10250015 (NAVI indicating external disconnection) can (and DID occur to us) when the .05 cent plastic plugs were not properly installed in the chassis of our highlander. This error allowed water from a standard drive through car wash the ability to enter into the bottom floorboard of the vehicle which shorted out the NAVI system. Originally we were also quoted over $5K but the dealership identified the FACT that they are missed putting in the plugs for the standard service when new and they absorbed all costs. This car was in warrantee when it occurred but I see that others in here are not (yet) aware of this "simple" error and are not getting the proper response from toyota on their Highlander. Hopefully this will help. | 2004 | Vickie F. | FAIRFIELD ME | 01/15/09 | 3.00 | Climate Control fan doesn't turn on under 30 degree weather. | 2004 | Richard W. |
| 10/08/08 | 3.00 | climate control dial won't lock in the temperture...more cold then hot... | 2004 | Roger M. | BATTLE MOUNTAIN NV | 09/18/08 | 3.00 | Crazy shift pattern and leak in transaxle (warranty issue) | 2004 | Bob W. | PLEASANTON CA | 06/16/08 | 5.00 | Rides very nice. | 2004 | Gf G. | ASHBURNHAM MA | 05/05/08 | N/A.00 | great | 2004 | Ronald R. | AKRON OH | 04/16/08 | 1.00 | Front differential leaked fluid and had to be replaced @ 74,000 miles - 15 months later @ 101,000 miles the differential conpletely locked up and the rear axel sheared off - Ganley Toyota said tough luck | 2004 | Richard G. | SAINT PAUL MN | 11/03/07 | 2.00 | We noticed some oil on the floor of our garage under our 2004 Highlander. We took the Highlander to our dealer and they told us that the rear main seal needs to be replaced. They said that it's a very labor intensive job (about 20 hours) and quoted the cost for replacing this seal at $2250. They say that in order to replace this seal the engine has to be dropped!
This is shocking! It's obviously a very poor job of engineering! This is something that I never would have expected from a Toyota product!
| 2004 | Chuck E. | VIRGINIA BEACH VA | 10/03/07 | n/a | Tire warning light won't stay off. Ever since dealer rotated tires the light comes on, I reset it and then short time later it comes back on | 2004 | Louie Y. | LEXINGTON SC | 07/25/07 | 5.00 | Great car! Averages 24 mpg. I have over 110,000 miles now. No defects or problems to report. I'm on the 2nd set of tires, which have about 75K on them now. Wow! | 2004 | Ray S. | GREENSBORO NC | 07/08/07 | 4.00 | Reliable. Good cargo space. OEM tires Bridgestone - "C+" rating by me. Only 33K miles and wear-bars showing. Rough riding. Michelin LTX next time - any day now they will arrive at my local Costco. | 2004 | Bernard P. | CARLSBAD CA | 03/25/07 | 4.00 | Instruments too deep. hard to read in daylight.
At night, lights on-no problem.
Dials should be a light color. | 2004 | GLENN H. | BUCHANAN VA | 11/03/06 | 4.00 | had a problem with the steering and took back to dealer, was a problem on this model and the dealer knew about it and fixed under a service bulletin but was not on a recall list. The dealer said that not all highlanders had this problem and they fixed under the service bulletin if the customer complained. | 2004 | Bill R. | CENTERPORT NY | 09/13/06 | 5.00 | Excellent ride, mechanics etc. | 2004 | Bill B. | FALLS CHURCH VA | 11/11/05 | 2.00 | paint: clearcoat chips /scratches too easily.
engine/transmissiion: on acceleration, hesitates before
kicking in. Very noticeable in stop and go traffic, car lurches forward. | 2004 | Dan S. | BENICIA CA | 10/19/05 | 4.00 | Extremely comfortable. Only problem is the occasional transmission 'lurching' | 2004 | Frank K. | FAIRFAX VA | 10/12/04 | 4.00 | I have noticed problems on acceleration occassionally as well. The car has 15K miles and also does not shift as smoothly when going from 1-2 gear and 2-3 in slow driving. Rapid acceleration gives smoother shifting but this is not safe in short neighborhood driving. The corolla I had as a loaner during the 15K checkup shifted more smoothly. Technician said there might be a TSB or software upgrade but the car is in the shop for the checkup today so we'll see what they say. Interesting to read similar comments. | 2004 | Andrew L. | BELMONT CA | 08/18/04 | 2.00 | I have news about the transmission problem. We bought the 2004 highlander in late 2003. Noticed a problem with hesitation and jerky ride. I reported the problem 5 or 6 time over the course of the year, pretty much gave up on it. I hated the car due to the unsafe and lousy ride. However after reading the other complaints I realized that I was not alone and that the problem was in many cars not just ours. I recently went back to the dealership to build up documentation to sue them and they tried again to repair it. A service bulletin had come out (TSB TC 004-05) they said that the repair had been done previously but checked the “calibration” ours was 34838000, 54820000. Changed it to 34876000, 54830000 and reset memory. Now, I have to admit, that the ride is at least 70% better. The hesitation from 0 – 30 is gone. And the rolling 20-40 is a lot better |
