I too hear still the knocking in the trunk never have known what it is the car has been through 6 sets of brakes, and about 6 sets of tires howere I was using the car to commute a lot the car has 146,000 miles on it and for the most part it drives decent gets me where I need to go. It has also had the brake master cylinder go out at around 40,000 and I had a problem with the visors parts falling off as well I also had peeling on the inside door handles which cut my hands and my childrens hands several times. After I bought the car 6 months later I was 27 and I had never been in a car accident before til someone hit the side of the cobalt on the front right side no airbags deployed I now recently had an accident where a truck driver clipped me causing me to rear-end a parked car going around 35mph to the front end and still no air bags I think there is a major safety default with this car also have had to replace 3 hubs on the wheels the lug nuts are not proper for the cars with only hub caps they strip out the bolts on the hub assembly's one went out and 3 broke off. CA | 03/03/10 | 1.00 | I've been a dedicated chevy car owner for the last 10 years (as long as I've been legal to drive, at age 16)! My first 2 cars were a '68 malibu & a '64 malibu ss! Then I purchased a 2001 Camaro brand new off the lot, then a 2001 blazer 4x4, & after that a 2000 blazer 4x4 which I then traded in for my brand new 2007 chevy cobalt LTZ coupe in May of '07. I've never owned anything but a chevy & never had any intentions of owning anything but....!! I've never had any complaints with any of my chevys until I financed my cobalt. I swear, this car is the biggest peice of crap car in the history of new vehicles! Where do I begin? OK, so within one week of owning this cobalt I noticed a very large, deep crack in the windshield completely obstructing my view. Of coarse glass isnt covered by ANYONE unless its a chip(before it spiders into a long crack) which it was, apperantly, for only about an hour! At 3 months, the e-brake cable disconnected, within the first year the following problems existed: rotars/brake pads had to be replaced (twice now!), both front & passenger visor mirror covers just fell off(never even used them), the small plastic piece found on the seatbelt (keeps the actual male end of seatbelt from sliding down to the floor) popped out, the cheep chrome-looking film on top of the shifter knob started to peel off resulting in my palm being roughed up & cut whenever I shifted, had to replace tires; started to show thread & bubble, the steering wheel controls have a mind of their own(volume up turns volume down & visa-versa), glovebox light burned out almost right away, the blinkers stick & stay on after turn is made (both left & right blinkers), & now the biggest problem of all.....the front left strut's gone bad & is leaking oil!! It makes this horrible loud rattling under my feet when I drive not so perfectly smooth roads. Dealer could not replicate condition so they said nothing was wrong. This started not long after I bought the car on Labor Day in 2006. On Christmas Day 2008, my battery died (32,000 miles on the car) - major bummer. On 3/9/09, we had about 6 inches of snow, when I started up my car the next morning, it didn't want to move out of the parking space, when I finally got it moving the vehicle was very sluggish (no, the parking brake was not engaged), after I got it on the highway, there was a sound like something broke loose and the car started running properly, however, now it's vibrating, like something is wrong with the tires. I'm very disappointed with the quality of this car - I'm 49 years old and this is the first brand new car I've ever owned in my life and I'm starting to think it's a lemon. I've always believed in buying American made vehicles, but this experience is definitley going to have an impact on what kind of car I choose to purchase next. No wonder GM's going bankrupt. I imagined myself driving on the interstate, as I do a few times a day, going 65mph with my 3 year old child in the back strapped in her car seat, and BAM!, the power steering fails and I crash because I can't manuver the turn. IS IT SERIOUSLY GONNA TAKE A FATAL ACCIDENT FOR THERE TO BE A RECALL ON THE 2007 COBALTS' POWER STEERING??? ARE U SERIOUS? THERE ARE OVER 25 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM AND HOW INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS IT CAN BE AND HAS BEEN!!!! WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?? My air conditoner smells moldy and my heater fan is making noise. Seal around both driver and passanger windows bad. Everytime i take it in i get the same thing we fixed your complaints but still the car is in the same condition as i took it in. My biggest complaint is the car smells like rotten eggs all the time it only has 15,000 miles on it. Breaks are not good on car, takes a while to stop, car shakes when stopping. Air conditioner smells moldy when on. Fuel gage is incorrect. crack in interior that Chevy blamed on me, when their repair guys were the ones who broke it and tried to repair it. | 12/12/07 | 1.00 | traction control system on this car is a saftey hazard. It will decellerate engine if it senses any wheel slippage. As you know if you are doing 60 mph on ice and the engine was to suddenly go to an idle it is just like applying the brakes. You go into a skid. Only when you step on the gas to try and pull yourself out there is nothing there. The engine doesn't rev up. Was told by company rep that the way the system is operating is normal and that I should buy special ice tires for winter. The traction control on this system can;t be turned off. I have had numerous near accidents because of it. Once I was going up a hill and hit a patch of ice. the engine decelerated back to an idle and as a result the car slowed down and stopped in the middle of the road. I applied the brakes and started slidding backwards. Ended up in the ditch to avoid rear end collision. Another time I was stopped on a slight incline at a traffic light. when the light turned I stepped on the gas. the tires spun for a half second, the traction control took over and the engine went back to an idle.
