04/22/09 1.00 Dealing with a bearing failure in my transmission. Car is at 130,000 kms, mostly highway driving (not hilly). Transmission was just checked and serviced one month ago and reported to be good. Repair quoted by dealer to be $4400 CDN. Not the reliability I had read about.

01/23/09 5.00 I bought this car new in 11/02. I have never had a bit of trouble until about 1-1/2 - 2 years ago when the check engine light came on. Took it in and they said the catalytic converter is going out to the tune of $1200. The car still runs good, light is still on. Have 160,000 miles on it and brakes have yet to have to be replaced (I commute to work). Love the car. Update: Now have 170,000 miles. Check engine light still on - catalytic converter still operational.

01/16/09 1.00 I sent this letter to the President of Toyota but, they refuse to back their defective product. January 7, 2009 Office of the President Toyota Motor Sales, USA., INC. 19001 South Western Ave. Torrance, CA 90501 Re: VIN 2T1KR32E83C074706 Case #s 20812220115, 200812310223, Etc.. On November 29, 2008 I bought a 2003 Toyota Matrix with 44,598 miles on it. After about 500 miles (about a week after buying the car) the check engine light came on, it was over a quart low on oil and had a engine code P0420. A couple of days later I checked the oil again and it had used over another quart. I was told the PCV valve could be bad so I had it replaced and the oil topped off. After this I drove the car 50 miles and it used around 2/3 a quart of oil. I called the Toyota experience center and told them the problems I was having and they told me to take it to the local dealer to have it checked. The person I talked to, looked up the VIN # and told me that the engine on this car had been rebuilt at 41,459 miles, in November 2007 at Headquarters Toyota, In Miami, Florida. He also told me that Toyota would probably pick up the repair since it had less than 4,000 miles on a rebuilt engine (currently the car has 45,398 mile on it). I took the car to my local dealer L&S Toyota, in Beckley, WV on December 23, 2008 and told them that the Toyota experience center asked me to bring the car to them. L&S Toyota did a compression test on the engine and it failed. The service manager at L&S Toyota told me the engine block should have been replaced when Headquarters Toyota rebuilt the engine, but hadnt been. After about 10 calls to Toyota Corporate and numerous case numbers the verdict was in today. Terri the Service Manager at L&S Toyota of Beckley said they will not fix the engine unless I pay for the repair myself. Furthermore, Terri told me I would be responsible for the cost of the compression test and putting the valve cover back on. John Lino from Headquarters

08/23/08 5.00 like all Toyotas this is a great car

05/21/08 2.00 I was disappointed in the quality. I had trouble with the headlights burning out too fast, driver's window shattering, engine light on/off dependent on my fuel level, etc.

01/14/06 1.00 Standard transmission is failing @ 75K. My last standard transmission lasted until 200K but the clutch was still good. I heard Toyota had good cars, but to have my transmission start failing @ 75K. Left piece of junk @ side of road when the clutch and tranmission went @ 96K luckily were at our exit off of expressway a 1/4 mile from home. It would cost more to fix than the car was worth. Never to purchase another Toyota after hearing other about other Toyota model complaints too!! Experienced the joy of Toyota service department with the Matrix problems and not one complaint addressed ever.

11/11/05 4.00 Great workhorse with economy interiors.
2003 Ed B. DAYTON

06/27/05 5.00 Bought it new and do the maintaince myself. UPDATE @ 70K and it runs great, and I drive it hard. We sold the delivery Matrix at 125K mi and it too was running very strong with no issues other than routine maintaince. On my personal car, at 70K, the ave MPG is now 28.7. If I would not race it in the SCCA SOLO now and then, the MPG would exceed 30 for the life of this car. It is a GREAT car!
2003 Stan C.

05/30/05 3.00 After a few years, it develops the typical North-American car rattles. Not surprising, as it's made here.
2003 Dave A. CHICAGO

07/19/04 4.00 Pleased with overall performance. Complaints of poor gauge visibility etc are overated. Have experienced occassional surging but not considered a safety issue. 50k+ on vehicle now
2003 Andree P. YOUNGSVILLE

01/28/04 2.00 Oil sludge and transmission problems since 11,000 miles.
